Scopone Scientifico is the tournament-standard variant of Scopone — all 40 cards dealt out before play begins, the table starting completely empty, and every capture demanding precise calculation. You and your partner face another team across the table. Learn the rules here, then play free as part of our Ultimate Scopa Collection.
Scopone Scientifico is the tournament-standard variant of Scopone, the 4-player partnership version of Scopa. You and your partner sit opposite each other, facing another team across the table. The name "Scientifico" refers to the strategic depth: all 40 cards are dealt out before play begins and the table starts completely empty — no redeals, no new cards mid-hand. With every card already in someone's hand from the first play, every capture demands precise calculation rather than reacting to a fresh deal.
You're never obligated to capture — sometimes a strategic discard is the stronger play.
If your capture clears the table completely (and you still have cards left in hand), you score a Scopa — 1 bonus point. Here's the rule that makes Scopone Scientifico different from Classic Scopone: the very last card played in the hand does count as a Scopa if it captures everything remaining on the table. In Classic Scopone, the last capture of the hand never counts as a Scopa — this variant reverses that.
Most Cards — 1 point to the team that captured more cards in total.
Most Coins — 1 point to the team with more Coin-suit cards.
Settebello — 1 point to the team that captures the 7 of Coins, the most important single card in the game.
Primiera — 1 point, see below.
Scopas — 1 point for every Scopa scored during the hand.
Each team picks its highest-value card in each of the four suits and totals them. The Primiera point values are fixed regardless of card art: 7 is worth 21 (the highest), 6 is worth 18, Ace is worth 16, 5 is worth 15, 4 is worth 14, 3 is worth 13, 2 is worth 12, and the face cards (King, Knight, Jack) are worth 10 each. The highest total wins the point; a team missing an entire suit loses Primiera automatically. The 7 is king of Primiera — capturing sevens across multiple suits is the most important strategic goal after the Settebello.
Scoring is cumulative across hands. The first team to reach 11 points or more at the end of a hand wins the match. If both teams reach 11 in the same hand, the higher score wins; if still tied, another hand is played until one side pulls ahead.
Scopone Scientifico is played by exactly 4 players in two fixed partnerships, sitting opposite their partner.
All 40 cards are dealt out at the very start, so the table begins completely empty with no redeals mid-hand. It also reverses one rule: the last card played in the hand does count as a Scopa if it clears the table, whereas in Classic Scopone it never does.
No — you're never obligated to capture. A strategic discard, deliberately leaving a card for your partner, is a legitimate and often winning tactic.
Each team's best card in each suit is totalled using fixed values (7=21, 6=18, Ace=16, 5=15, 4=14, 3=13, 2=12, face cards=10). The higher total wins the point; missing a whole suit loses it automatically.
Score across five categories each hand — Most Cards, Most Coins, Settebello, Primiera, and Scopas — across hands until one team reaches 11 points.
