Tresillo is Spain's historic ancestor of Ombre. Each hand, one player — the hombre — bids to play solo against the other two, the defenders, in a 9-trick contest with a 40-card Spanish deck. The hombre wins by taking 5 or more of the 9 tricks.
Each player is dealt 9 cards in batches of 3. The remaining 13 cards form the stock.
If all three players pass, whoever holds the espada (Ace of Swords) is forced to play as hombre in an ordinary game. The hand is only reshuffled and redealt if the espada happens to be sitting unseen in the stock. After the hombre exchanges (or immediately, on a Solo), the two defenders negotiate who exchanges first: each signals roughly how strong their hand is, and the stronger-sounding hand usually goes first for the better pick of what's left.
Spadille (Ace of Swords) is always the highest trump. Manille is the 2 of trumps if trump is a black suit (Swords/Clubs), or the 7 of trumps if trump is a red suit (Coins/Cups). Basto (Ace of Clubs) is always the third-highest trump. These three cards are unbeatable except by each other.
A matador is only forced out by a higher matador being led: Spadille can never be forced out; Manille is forced only when Spadille is led; Basto is forced when either Spadille or Manille is led. If none of your matadors are outranked by the lead, you may renege — play any card — instead of following trump.
Follow the suit led if you can. There's no obligation to play trump unless trump was led. The highest trump wins the trick; otherwise the highest card of the suit led wins. The trick winner leads next. If the hombre wins the first 5 tricks in a row, they may claim victory immediately.
On an Entrada or Vuelta (not Solo), just before the 4th trick the hombre may propose to surrender. If both defenders accept, the hand ends immediately as a Puesta. If either insists on continuing, that defender takes over as hombre for the rest of the hand.
Black trump suits (Swords/Clubs): non-trump ranking is King > Knight > Jack > 7 > 6 > 5 > 4 > 3 > 2 (the Ace is always a trump when its suit is trump, so it never appears here). Red trump suits (Coins/Cups): non-trump ranking is King > Knight > Jack > Ace > 2 > 3 > 4 > 5 > 6 > 7.
Sacada — the hombre takes strictly more tricks than each defender individually (usually 5+, or a 4-3-2 split). Collects from both defenders, doubled for Solo, doubled again for winning all 9 (a Bola).
Codillo — one defender takes strictly more tricks than both the hombre and the other defender (5+, or 4 with a 3-2 split). The hombre pays that defender double — the worst outcome.
Puesta — nobody has a clear majority (e.g. 4-4-1, 3-3-3, or 1-4-4). The hombre pays a smaller penalty into the pool.
Estuche — if the hombre holds and plays all three matadors and wins, each defender pays 1 extra point. Primeras — if the hombre claims immediately after winning the first 5 tricks in a row, each defender pays 1 extra point. Failed Bola — if the hombre plays on past 5 straight wins but fails to take all 9 tricks, they pay each defender an extra penalty.
Tresillo is played by exactly 3 players — the hombre plays solo against two defenders — using a 40-card Spanish deck.
Entrada (name trump, then exchange any cards), Vuelta (trump set by the top stock card, then exchange), and Solo (play as dealt, no exchange, highest-ranking bid with a bonus).
Spadille (Ace of Swords), Manille (the 2 or 7 of trumps depending on suit colour), and Basto (Ace of Clubs) — the three highest trumps, beatable only by each other.
By taking strictly more tricks than each defender individually — a Sacada. If a single defender beats both the hombre and the other defender, that's a Codillo, the worst outcome for the hombre.
Points accumulate across hands based on Sacada, Codillo, or Puesta outcomes, plus bonuses like Estuche and Primeras — there's no fixed target shown in the rules beyond accumulating the most favourable results over time.
